Newcastle vs Sunderland already at risk of postponement as new announcement made

Sunderland are due to travel to face Newcastle in March.

Sunderland secured a 1-0 win over Newcastle back in December, continuing their impressive run against the Magpies in Premier League encounters.

Nick Woltemade’s own goal proved to be the difference, though the Black Cats were more than deserving of their three points on the day.

That rivalry is due to be renewed in March, though the game is at risk of being rescheduled as a result of a new announcement made that could concern Newcastle.

Newcastle’s Carabao Cup involvement could scupper March’s Tyne-Wear derby

Many Newcastle supporters had Sunderland to finish at the bottom of the Premier League with a record-low number of points.

Not only were they wrong about that, but their defeat to the Black Cats alsohumbled them in their tracks, with Eddie Howe’s men undoubtedly looking to get revenge in March.

As things stand, Sunderland are due to travel to St James’ Park on 21 March, with a chance that it could be moved to 22 March to allow for sufficient policing.

However, the Carabao Cup final has since been announced, and that will now take place on that weekend at Wembley, with kick-off due at 4-30pm on the Sunday.

Newcastle are looking unlikely to be involved in that, given the 2-0 deficit they will have to overcome away to Man City, but if they were to achieve that, the Tyne-Wear derby would have to be moved to a different weekend.

How have Sunderland fared away to Newcastle in the past?

Sunderland’s last defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park was all the way backin 2010, when Darren Bent scored a late consolation goal in a heavy 5-1 defeat.

However, that is one of only two league defeats that the Black Cats have suffered against their neighbours dating back to 2008.

The other loss came a year later at the Stadium of Light, when Ryan Taylor scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

Since their last away defeat, Sunderland have faced off against Newcastle on five occasions on Tyneside, winning three of those encounters.
