Mundle to ‘step up’ for Sunderland amid new contract developments – Exclusive

Romaine Mundle’s future at Sunderland looks set to be resolved shortly.

The 22-year-old caused concern when he removed any mention of Sunderland from his Instagram page amid transfer speculation.

Regis Le Bris will be keen to keep him around, as he was crucial in their promotion-winning campaign, notching five goals and two assists in 24 matches.

Mundle tipped to star for Sunderland in the Premier League

Sunderland are set to offer Mundle a new contract, in order to fend off interest from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, according to Football Insider (16 July).

Iconic commentator Ian Darke believes it is a no-brainer that the Black Cats are offering the winger a new deal ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, he said: “He is quick on that left side, and he was part of the play-off final winning team.

“I think he is one of those they need to keep on board, he is only going to improve, he is only 22 years old.

“he played 24 games in the Championship, five goals last season, had some injuries.

“The fact that they are offering him a new deal, he is very much going to be part of the set-up.

“I saw him play at Fratton Park last season, and I have seen him on television a couple of times, he is handy, you can see him making the step up.”

Sunderland suffer Mundle blow ahead of Premier League return

While his contract situation could be handled soon, if reports are accurate, his playing status is a concern.

The Stadium of Light star took to Instagram (19 July) to confirm that he has undergone surgery ahead of the new season after injuries plagued him last time out.

The hope will be that the former Tottenham youth prospect can return and play a significant part in the North East outfit’s first campaign back in the top-flight for eight years, but it remains to be seen what kind of impact he will have.

When he is fit, he is a dangerous player and could cause issues for defences at the top level, but he needs to return to full fitness before he can showcase that ability.
