Mowbray reacts to Sunderland win v Sheffield United, shares what he saw at Wembley
Sunderland returned to the Premier League after a seven-year absence with a win over Sheffield United at Wembley on Saturday.
Two late goals saw the Black Cats come from behind after a disappointing first-half performance left them trailing 1-0 at halftime.
Tommy Watson scored the winning goal deep into second-half stoppage time, sending the 40,000 fans behind the goal into a frenzy.
The atmosphere inside Wembley was electric, with thousands of fans celebrating a dream realised after years of hard work and setbacks.
Watson’s late winner capped a determined comeback, securing Sunderland’s promotion and setting the stage for their return to the Premier League next season.

Tony Mowbray shares what he saw in Sunderland win at Wembley
Tony Mowbray, who guided the Mackems to the Championship play-off semi-finals in 2022 before their defeat to Luton, was present at Wembley to witness this historic promotion.
He told talkSPORT journalist Ian Abrahams on 24 May how proud he was of the players and fans following Sunderland’s heroic performance.
“I watched the game and am very proud of those players. I’m just delighted for the team, for the players, delighted for the supporters, to be honest,” said Mowbray.
“It’s a massive football club, hopefully it can do itself justice in the Premier League. Sometimes you’ve got to be careful what you wish for, but you’ve got everybody who wishes to get to the Premier League. But as we’ve seen the last couple of years, it’s tough when you get there. But I’m so happy for them today and the fans.
“It’s amazing that they turn out with over 40,000 every week and support that team. And they’ve all got their rewards today. It’s an amazing day. We saw this very final. They go right to the end, and they went right to the end today.”
Régis Le Bris takes Sunderland back to Premier League
Seventy-six minutes into the final, it looked like the Blades were returning to the Premier League with Leeds and Burnley.
However, a moment of quality from Eliezer Mayenda started the comeback and helped secure promotion with Régis Le Bris and his side celebrating the victory into the night.
Attention now turns to next season, where Sunderland must invest wisely in the squad, especially with potential new funding expected following their promotion.
Smart recruitment will be crucial, as the Black Cats will likely start as underdogs, with many predicting a swift return to the Championship.
Fans have waited 27 years since the dramatic 4-3 defeat to Charlton at Wembley, eager to finally rewrite their history.
This moment will live with the fans for a while.
