Mike Dean reacts instantly to Man United vs Sunderland controversy, Premier League may have questions to answer

Sunderland and Man United have been battling it out on Saturday afternoon, and it has been a game marred by controversy.

Ruben Amorim is under immense pressure at Old Trafford, but his side boast a 2-0 lead thanks to Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

However, it could have been entirely different after a contentious moment that happened towards the end of the first half.

Now, former Premier League referee Mike Dean has reacted to the incident that has sparked debate.

Mike Dean shares thoughts on Sunderland penalty incident

Alan Shearer predicted Sunderland to lose at Old Trafford, and unfortunately, it seems he might be right.

The Back Cats were by far second-best in the opening 45 and struggled to create any real chances of note.

However, near the end of the half, the Wearsiders launched a long throw into the United box, with Sesko’s boot appearing to strike Trai Hume’s head.

The referee awarded a penalty, but was then sent to the screen to review the incident, overturning his decision.

“The issue I have, we have referees as VAR and assistant refs as AVARs,” Dean said while speaking on Sky Sports News on 4 October.

“For some unknown reason at Old Trafford, we have the opposite. It should always be a referee as a full-time VAR. There’s no contact; he shouldn’t have been sent to the screen. It’s correct, 100%.”

While there is time for Sunderland to turn the game around, time is running out at Old Trafford.

Regis Le Bris given reality check at Old Trafford

Sunderland have been immense in the Premier League, but the clash with United has been a step too far for Le Bris’ men.

To be fair to the Red Devils, they have been on top form, and it appears that the players are doing all they can to save Amorim.

However, the Wearsiders have struggled defensively, with Arthur Masuaku looking out of his depth at times.

Le Bris has done all he can to change the flow of the game, making several changes to personnel and his formation.

Now, the Frenchman must use the international break to forge a plan for a key upcoming home encounter with Wolves.
