Mike Dean reacts immediately to Sunderland controversy vs Brentford

Sunderland could have been awarded a penalty in the early stages of their clash with Brentford.

The Stadium of Light is going to be the Black Cats’ secret weapon this season, as showcased by Sunderland’s opening-day victory against West Ham.

Brentford are the visitors on Saturday, and the atmosphere is once again having an effect on Sunderland‘s ability to play on the front.

With their early pressure, Regis Le Bris’ side dominated the ball in the Brentford half and had a penalty shout less than 10 minutes into the game.

Anthony Taylor waves away Sunderland penalty shouts

Le Bris has clearly instructed his side to play on the front foot, and Sunderland have sent a number of dangerous crosses into the box.

One of those arrived from a corner, with a deep cross seemingly hitting the arm of Michael Kayode, just seconds before Sunderland’s latest addition Nordi Mukiele fired an effort over the bar.

Sunderland players and supporters were screaming for a penalty, but Anthony Taylor was quick to wave away the shouts, and Mike Dean believes it was the right call.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News on 30 August, Dean said: “No [I don’t think it was a penalty].

“I think it’s come off his chest as well, chest, knee, then arm, so no penalty. It’s the correct decision on the field and no need for the VAR to get involved this time.”

Sunderland fall victim to scrutinised handball rule

Previously, in football, if the ball hit your arm, it was a foul; It was fairly simple.

Now, there are several considerations that need to be made before any decision is confirmed.

Not only that, but they seem to be remarkably inconsistent, as seen in the Chelsea victory over Fulham earlier on Saturday afternoon.

It would have been a very harsh call from Brentford’s point of view, though the rules certainly do not take that into account.

Sunderland were on the right side of a harsh decision against Burnley, and seemingly on the wrong end of it this time around and that is something that the Wearsiders are going to have to get used to in the Premier League.
