Micah Richards claims ‘detailed’ look at Sunderland needed despite joyous Premier League start
Sunderland prepared themselves well for the Premier League in the summer transfer window.
In an attempt to stay in the Premier League, Sunderland spent well over £100million on signings to strengthen their squad to try and remain in England’s top flight.
After Sunderland beat Wolves 2-0 on 18 October, the Black Cats now sit seventh in the Premier League, with many Mackem fans looking past relegation.
The Stadium of Light has been a fortress, as Regis Le Bris has been hailed for the magnificent work he has done with Sunderland.
However, former Manchester City defender, now pundit, Micah Richards has praised Sunderland, but still believes more needs to be said about the Black Cats.

Micah Richards wants deep dive into Sunderland data
Sunderland are sitting on a healthy 14 points from their first eight Premier League games, but Le Bris‘ side is far from safe yet.
With 30 games still to go, a lot can happen, and Richards has alluded to that when voicing his opinion on what Sunderland have actually brought to the table in their first eight games.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards said, “We need a more detailed look at Sunderland, because we’ve given them a lot of praise, but we haven’t broken down exactly what they do.
“They’ve brought £161m worth of players, 14 players, and they’ve managed to gel so well. We had Sunderland struggling because of the amount of players, but the manager has managed to get them all playing.
- Sunderland mainly play with a 4-2-3-1
- Le Bris has used a mix of new signings and players already at the club last season
- Sunderland have a low average of possession in the Premier League so far
“I still think Sunderland need more of a deep dive.”
Time will tell for Sunderland, however, the start the Mackems have made is by no chance of luck, as Le Bris has coached several top performances from his side already.
Regis Le Bris knows what he’s doing at Sunderland
Nottingham Forest were a prime example of when bringing too many players into a club in one window, things can go bad.
However, like Richards has said, Le Bris has managed the influx of players extremely well, and with him balancing his side out with players like Chris Rigg and Wilson Isidor from last season, he is finding the best mix.
Sunderland will only get better with time, as the squad will continue to gel and form new relationships on the field.
It’s an exciting time to be a Sunderland fan.
