Met Office issue weather warning – Will Sunderland vs Aston Villa be postponed?

Sunderland play host to Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Sitting pretty in seventh, Sunderland face Aston Villa this weekend, looking to extend their winning home run in the Premier League.

Last time out on home soil, Sunderland beat Brentford 2-1, courtesy of a last-minute Wilson Isidor header to secure three points.

However, ahead of Sunday’s clash, a weather warning has been sent out to those in Wearside.

Travel disruption to be expected ahead of Sunderland vs Aston Villa

Given Aston Villa’s winless start to the Premier League campaign, the Black Cats will not want to see the game postponed for any reason, and while unlikely, there is a new weather warning in place.

According to the Met Office, a yellow warning for rain has been issued for Wearside, indicating potential delays and travel disruptions.

There is a risk of flooding in the North East, which could lead to road closures or damage to buildings.

Sunday forecast at 2pm

By Sunday morning, it states that rain should ease on Wearside, though showers and strong winds will remain present.

It’s unlikely to prevent Sunderland’s clash with Aston Villa from going ahead, though it will almost certainly cause issues for people travelling further to get to the game.

Sunderland must adhere to weather conditions vs Aston Villa

While it will be the same for both teams, Sunderland must adapt their game specifically to the weather conditions on Sunday afternoon.

If the last four games are anything to go by, Sunderland will be looking to exploit the space with quick, counter-attacking moves, and the surface will make it difficult to maximise their chances from those situations.

Sunderland have already struggled in the final third this season, and while it may be minimal, there will still be an effect on their game if rain persists.

At the same time, Sunderland’s defence has impressed, but the conditions will ensure that any mistakes made in Sunday’s clash will be punished by Unai Emery’s side.
