Mel Reay reveals ‘problems’ after Sunderland Women secure fourth straight win

Mel Reay highlighted the “problems” she will face in team selection after her Sunderland Women side were able to see off Sheffield United on Sunday.

The victory was the Black Cats’ fourth straight win and saw them move up to fifth in the Women’s Championship.

Eleanor Dale was on the scoresheet again, scoring her fifth goal in four games with Reay “delighted” with her performance.

Speaking on the club channels after the game (17 November) she said: “We started the game really brightly, we wanted a fast start. I thought we had good bouts of possession, just couldn’t really make it click in the final third to take the lead.

“We had to be at the races. Delighted for Peggy who slotted into midfield, thought she was terrific and the substitutes that came on changed the game for us.

“Confidence is high, everyone wants to play and it gives me problems in terms of team selection but absolutely delighted for Eleanor, another goal as well.”

Sunderland Women win again

Having endured a poor start to the season, it was crucial for Reay to get her team firing again and with four wins in a row, she certainly has.

Wins against Durham FC, Bristol City, Blackburn and most recently Sheffield United has seen her side pick up some serious momentum with several players showcasing the level of performance that was so often displayed last campaign.

Off the back of last season’s narrow disappointment, Reay will be hoping her side can achieve success in the current campaign and momentum and consistency will be key to that.

Having played the same number of games, Sunderland Women find themselves just three points behind league leaders Birmingham having lost 5-0 to them on the opening day of the season.

If Sunderland Women can continue to show the level of performance they have in recent weeks, they will put themselves in an excellent position to achieve their ultimate goal of promotion.

In other Sunderland news, Chris Mepham was an unused substitute for Wales on Saturday and Regis Le Bris will be pleased at his low risk of injury.
