Conor Gallagher may be the midfield arrival that Sunderland are looking for.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus wants a top 10 finish for Sunderland, and as a result, their January transfer business is likely to reflect that ambition.

The Black Cats have already been linked with several top European stars, though early indications suggest that adding another central midfielder is going to be high up on the list of priorities.

Mateo Guendouzi decides against Sunderland move

The Frenchman knows Regis Le Bris well from the time spent with him at Lorient, and was even linked with a move in the summer, though the Black Cats signed Granit Xhaka instead (what a crazy sentence).

However, a report from Calcio Mercato claims that Guendouzi is not currently interested in a move to Sunderland, with Mauricio Sarri also unlikely to be willing to part ways with his midfielder.

Since joining Lazio in 2023, Guendouzi has been a regular starter in Serie A, having started 10 times for them already this season.

However, it's a very different story for Gallagher, making it seem as though a move for the former Chelsea star could be far more reasonable.

Conor Gallagher would be a shrewd addition at Sunderland

Gallagher may not be the type of player to get you off your seat, but he is the type of player that every team could do with, in some capacity.

Sunderland are light in the midfield area, and that will only be amplified when Noah Sadiki jets off to AFCON next month.

If Guendouzi isn't keen on a move, there is every chance that Sunderland will go full throttle in their attempts to bring Gallagher to Wearside, and it would be a very good addition.

However, to do so, they will have to fight off plenty of interest, with several Premier League clubs also keeping tabs.
