Jordan Henderson's return to Sunderland could very well be on the cards after the latest transfer news from Wearside.

For those who may be keen to hear it again, Sunderland are a Premier League club. However, with that comes a lot of planning and responsibility ahead of the summer.

Recruitment is going to be crucial for the Black Cats in their attempt to avoid the drop, and midfield targets are likely to be among those linked, especially if Jobe Bellingham departs.

One of those rumoured targets is former Sunderland academy graduate Henderson, who could be set to make an emotional return to the Stadium of Light.

Derek Ferguson urges Henderson to return to Wearside

Sunderland's success in the Championship comes down to several factors, though their approach to youth is the main one.

The Black Cats have promoted several youngsters to the first team, and reaped the rewards from that, though it isn't a newfound strategy.

Sunderland have had a number of top-quality players come through their academy, with Henderson among those, and Derek Ferguson thinks Sunderland would be the best move for him, despite interest from Scottish giants Rangers.

Speaking to Mackem News, he said: "He's a top player, there's no doubt about that. He's got a great mentality and has won some of the biggest honours around. But I just think that at the age of 34, his best days are maybe behind him.

"Could he potentially have a player-coach role at Rangers? I don't know. But as a player Rangers should be looking at players in their early 20s who have room to grow. If Sunderland came calling, I'd prefer to go to Sunderland."

Sunderland need to bring experience to Wearside

Signing young, promising players has plenty of benefits, but the addition of experience is what Sunderland need to have a fighting chance next season.

Henderson fits that bill, and his experience in English football would not only better things on the pitch, but also behind the scenes.

Sunderland need to get the big decisions right this summer ahead of what will be a hectic period.
