Reinildo has been blasted by Gary Neville for giving away a soft free-kick in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday.

Tensions were high in the first half as Sunderland looked to get their victory over their rivals since 2015.

While Newcastle were the favourites at the Stadium of Light, Regis Le Bris’ side more than matched the Magpies in the opening exchanges.

However, this did not stop some of the Sunderland players from committing needless challenges, much to the despair of Neville.

Gary Neville: Reinildo stupid for giving away silly free-kick

The first half had little action, as both sides looked to get an edge in the game.

However, there were, unsurprisingly, plenty of fouls, with Nordi Mukiele and Brian Brobbey both being booked.

Many of these incidents were needless, with Reinildo in particular being slammed for his challenge on Bruno Guimaraes just before half-time.

In the 38th minute, the full-back knocked down the Newcastle star in a dangerous position, which resulted in a free-kick for the visitors.

Commentating on Sky Sports on 14 December, Neville was unimpressed with Reinildo’s actions.

“Stupid from the Sunderland left-back. He (Bruno Guimaraes) has complete and utter control.

“It is a silly free-kick to give away.”

Sunderland vs Newcastle took 22 minutes for first effort on goal

Apart from the fouls flying in, the first half was very unimaginative from both sides.

There were only a combined four shots throughout, with zero being on target.

On top of this, it took a whopping 22 minutes for any side to even have a shot.

According to Squawka Live via X on 14 December, this was the longest wait in any Premier League fixture this season.

Luckily, it did not take long for Sunderland to find the back of the net in the second half.
