Dan Neil has already decided to stay at Sunderland this season, though he has another decision to make immediately on his playing career.

With Granit Xhaka named as the new Sunderland captain, it's clear that Neil has a battle on his hands to get back into the first team plans under Regis Le Bris.

Given that Neil has just one year left on his contract at the Stadium of Light, securing an extended deal is going to be crucial if he is to remain on Wearside.

However, with all of these contract uncertainties bubbling away on Wearside, a new one has emerged for the 23-year-old, and it concerns his international career.

Dan Neil could become first Chinese player to represent Sunderland

Neil has represented England at youth level, and at one point, he looked as though he had the ability to go on and make a senior appearance.

Those chances have since been subdued, but a new one has emerged in the form of China.

According to K.Sina, Neil "can be neutralised immediately" by China as a result of his Chinese descent, which comes from his mother.

She is Malaysian Chinese, and his grandparents are Chinese, meaning he would be a third-generation descendant.

Typically, it would take five years for this to be possible, but because of his family, he could switch allegiances immediately and become "the most successful naturalised player" for China.

Neil would become the first player to represent China while at Sunderland, while others have gone on to switch allegiances after departing the Stadium of Light.

Premier League football could take Neil to the next level

Even if the midfielder doesn't play a minute this season, being around the likes of Xhaka on the training pitch will elevate his game significantly.

It's easy to forget how young he still is, considering he has already featured 197 times for Sunderland.

A chance to play international football will be appealing to Neil, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him go down the Chinese route.
