Chris Sutton accepts fans will be 'furious' after what he's said ahead of Man United vs Sunderland

Alex is a lifelong Sunderland supporter who's been reporting on Mackem News since April 2025. Indeed, he started working for Breaking Media in April and has since graduated from St Mary's University as a NCTJ Gold Standard-accredited journalist, having completed his Master's degree in Sports Journalism. Alex previously worked for Football League World and has featured on the Roker Report, providing his opinion on all things Sunderland. While getting to the games is tricky, given his job, one of the highlights of his life was watching (and crying) as the Black Cats defeated Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium last season.

Chris Sutton has followed a familiar pattern when predicting how Sunderland will fare in their Premier League encounters.

Sutton tipped Sunderland to lose 2-1 against Nottingham Forest and could not have been more wrong as Regis Le Bris' side recorded their first away victory.

Le Bris' men travel to Man United on Saturday and will be hoping to end Ruben Amorim's dire tenure with another away win.

Now, Chris Sutton has apologised to the Wearside faithful after his latest round of Premier League predictions.

Chris Sutton predicts Sunderland to beat Man United

Le Bris will likely make minimal changes for Man United, with Lutsharel Geertruida, Enzo Le Fee, and Dan Ballard all pushing for a start.

The Black Cats are flying high in the Premier League and sit in fifth position on 11 points, just one shy of Southampton's tally last term.

As for United, they have continued their woeful form under Amorim and are languishing in 14th place on seven points.

"Sunderland fans should be thanking me, really, because I keep saying they will be beaten and Regis Le Bris' side keep on proving me wrong..." Sutton said via BBC Sport on 2 October.

"I am going to do the dirty on them this week, and I am going to predict they will win, which obviously means they won't, so apologies to all Sunderland supporters, because they must be absolutely furious with me for doing this.

Sutton went on to predict a 1-0 win for the Black Cats.

How have the Black Cats fared at Old Trafford?

Sunderland and Man United are primed for blustery conditions, with Storm Amy set to grace the UK this weekend.

The Wearsiders will be striving to cause a storm of their own, but have not fared too well at Old Trafford over the years.

  • Man United wins: 65
  • Draws: 38
  • Sunderland wins: 42

Sunderland last visited United on Boxing Day in 2016 and suffered a 3-1 loss in their relegation season under David Moyes.

The last time the North East club were victorious at Old Trafford was in 2014 when Seb Larsson bagged the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

However, that is Sunderland's only away win over the Red Devils in their last 31 visits, emphasising how hard a ground it has been to visit.

This time has a different feel about it, though, as Le Bris' men will be confident of another away win.
