Luke O’Nien makes hilarious self-own after Sunderland win v Sheffield United
Luke O’Nien took to Instagram after Sunderland beat Sheffield United on New Year’s Day with a hilarious dig at his own performance.
The Black Cats secured arguably their biggest win of the season on Wednesday, defeating the Blades 2-1 on home soil to take them within two points of the automatic promotion spots although the performance of O’Nien nearly affected that.
Now 30 years old, O’Nien has been a constant for Sunderland but his performance against Sheffield United very nearly cost his side having conceded a first-half penalty before sending a diving header into his own goal in the same half.
Fortunately, Sunderland went on to win the game as their hunt for promotion goes on and O’Nien saw the funny side in his post on Instagram (1 January) with a picture showcasing the Man of the Match trophy that was awarded to Eliezer Mayenda.
His post reads: “I CAN’T BELIEVE I got MOTM after scoring an OG and giving away a pen.
“All jokes aside, I love my teammates for getting me out of the bin. Mistakes will only make me better, don’t you worry about that.
“Happy New Year and congrats to the real MOTM Mayenda. Thanks for letting me borrow the trophy.”
Luke O’Nien will bounce back for Sunderland
Aside from the two howlers, O’Nien actually had a decent game and dealt well with the threat, or lack of, from Kieffer Moore and Rhian Brewster who had a pretty wretched evening on Wearside.
You could certainly make an argument for that being O’Nien’s first under-par performance of the season which is a testament to his importance in the side.
Given the absences of Dan Ballard and Jenson Seelt, Sunderland aren’t overly blessed with defensive options and ensuring those who are available can maintain their performance level will be crucial.

Typically, O’Nien is the most consistent performer in the Black Cats squad and the two incidents against the Blades certainly won’t be enough to knock his confidence.
He will undoubtedly be set to play yet another crucial role on Sunday as the Mackerms look to extend their unbeaten home run against Portsmouth.
