Luke O’Nien has quickly established himself as a hero on Wearside, with yet another solid performance in the win against Sheffield Wednesday.

O’Nien is certainly towards the top of that list, having impressed almost every time he has stepped onto the pitch ever since joining from Wycombe.

O’Nien stands out again for Sunderland
Not only was the win against Sheffield Wednesday a big one in the promotion race, but it was an even bigger one on a personal note for O’Nien as he made his 300th appearance for the club.
He did it in style, with yet another impressive showing against the Owls, adding them in their pursuit of three points at Hillsborough and keeping them in the promotion conversation.

One of his biggest strengths is his ability to play the ball out from the back, and that was on show against Sheffield Wedneday, with an 80 per cent pass accuracy from 51 attempted passes [FotMob].
O’Nien completed his only attempted dribble in the game, while standing strong when called upon defensively to nullify any attacking threat.
The 30-year-old won 100 per cent of his tackles and 75 per cent of his ground duels. With eight clearances and 14 defensive actions, O’Nien’s presence was crucial throughout the game.

Not only is O’Nien a fan favourite, but he has remained a first-team regular under the reign of several different managers, Regis Le Bris being the latest.
