Why latest Luke O’Nien announcement is a huge boost for Sunderland
Luke O’Nien has been a cult hero ever since arriving at Sunderland from Wycombe.
Only a handful of players remain from the days of League One, and in particular, the heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Charlton Athletic.
One of those still at the Stadium of Light is O’Nien, and he isn’t going anywhere soon after Sunderland announced a new contract for the midfielder-turned defender.

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Luke O'Nien has committed his future to the Club until 2027! ❤️
Now, the 30-year-old is a Premier League player, and he deserves that label more than anyone else.

O’Nien epitomises what it means to play for Sunderland
It has been seven years since O’Nien made the move to Wearside, and every minute of his spell has been a breath of fresh air.
He arrived as an unknown, but his character was clear from the start, and it is the sole reason he will be lining up in the Premier League this season.
Gone were the days of mercenaries; there was a new man on the block, and he was prepared to sacrifice whatever it took to thrive at Sunderland.
- 314 Sunderland appearances
- 23 goals
- EFL Trophy winner
- Two-time promotion winner
Every tackle, pass and shot was done so with a level of conviction that got the Mackems off their seats, and it’s hard not to mention the dark arts in his game.
This will be his eighth season in red and white stripes, and he is a living showcase of how easy it is to succeed at Sunderland if you adapt to the environment and give it your all on the pitch.
His new contract, valid until 2027, is just a testament to the level of faith that has been instilled in him, and long may that continue.
O’Nien will give it all this season, and his experience will be a huge boost for the Black Cats in their quest for survival.
Where will O’Nien play for Sunderland this season?
Perhaps the better question will be where won’t he play this season?
O’Nien’s versatility and willingness to do whatever it takes to play for Sunderland are the driving factors behind the success he has found.
That versatility will be key in the Premier League, especially when AFCON arrives in December.
He will almost certainly be seen as a centre-back option, though don’t be surprised to see him pop up in several positions throughout the campaign.
