Louis-Dreyfus reacts to Frank Lampard picture as Sunderland beat Coventry

Sunderland have reached the Championship playoff final after a dramatic win over Coventry City.

The Stadium of Light erupted into chaos on Tuesday as the Black Cats scored in injury time of extra time to reach Wembley, breaking Coventry hearts in the process.

Sunderland will now face Sheffield United, and they will hope that their last-minute winner can give them enough momentum to pull off a difficult victory in the final.

Dan Ballard headed in superbly to send fans into raptures over the 3-2 aggregate win, and Coventry manager Frank Lampard looked crestfallen on the touchline, much to Sunderland’s delight.

Sunderland’s push for promotion comes after a few years of work delivered by owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who first got involved with the club in 2021.

This long-term project has seen Louis-Dreyfus build a young team, as one of the youngest owners in world football, and his work is close to paying off.

Sunderland could return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, in no small part down to the Frenchman, who is popular among the supporters.

The 28-year-old has now made himself even more popular, as in the aftermath of the game at the Stadium of Light, he has liked a photo of Lampard appearing devastated on the touchline.

Sunderland aiming to reach Premier League

Sunderland are now just 90 minutes away from promotion to the Premier League, but they will face a tough test in Sheffield United.

The Blades finished 14 points above the Mackems in the Championship table, and beat Bristol City 6-0 on aggregate in their semi-final clash.

Louis-Dreyfus is hoping Sunderland can pull off another victory, which will see them make their long-awaited return to the top flight.

The Black Cats have been in League One more recently than the Premier League, and promotion will be vital as they aim to keep their key players, with several top talents of interest to top-flight clubs.

Jobe Bellingham is among the players linked with an exit, and this final will determine how well Sunderland do in the summer window in terms of keeping their core squad at the Stadium of Light.
