Chris Mepham loan update at Sunderland as recall clause not included – report

Chris Mepham is expected to remain at Sunderland for the season with Bournemouth not holding a recall option in his loan contract, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The news outlet reported on 1 January that Mepham is set to stick around at the Stadium of Light and given his performances this campaign, it is a massive boost for Sunderland.

Regis Le Bris previously hailed the Welshman as a gift and that is a testament to how important he has been for the Black Cats this season.

The report also states that Bournemouth have the option to extend Mepham’s contract for an extra year with it currently due to expire in the summer.

Chris Mepham can achieve promotion with Sunderland

Despite what has been a bit of a blip in recent weeks, the Mackems are still well on track to achieve promotion this season although it is starting to look like that may have to be achieved through the play-offs.

The Black Cats’ recent 1-0 defeat to Stoke has left them seven points behind league leaders Leeds and while that is nowhere near unsalvagable yet, the quality in the Whites’ squad makes it seem unlikely that Sunderland will be able to maintain their competition.

Since arriving, Mepham has made a huge difference and his quality and experience have shone through regularly with it just about impossible to pinpoint a poor performance from the Welsh international.

Keeping him at the club provides an instant boost although keeping him fit will be their next priority.

Mepham is yet to miss a game through injury and if the Wearsiders can maintain that, they have ane excellent foundation at the back to go on and achieve success.
