Leicester to pounce as Anthony Patterson exit now on cards at Sunderland already

Robin Roefs’ summer arrival at Sunderland has left Anthony Patterson in the shadows at the Stadium of Light.

Patterson will forever be remembered for his performance against Sheffield United in the play-off final, yet he hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season.

Regis Le Bris made the tough decision to replace him with Roefs, and Sunderland have been reaping the rewards ever since.

Patterson was previously linked with Leicester in the summer transfer window, and speculation over his future continues to grow every week.

Leicester interested in loan move for Anthony Patterson

Patterson was superb in the Championship play-off final, winning the Player of the Match award after superbly saving a Kieffer Moore header in the opening minutes of the match.

Alan Nixon has reported on his Patreon on Sunday that Leicester are still interested in signing Patterson on loan in January, with Sunderland ready to hear them out.

The Foxes are monitoring the situation closely and are the favourites for his signature, although Southampton are also interested in the goalkeeper.

Robin Roefs has been incredible for Sunderland since joining from NEC Nijmegen in the summer for a fee of £11.5million.

The impressive performances over the first seven matches have not gone unnoticed as Roefs nearly won the Premier League Player of the Month award for September, with Erling Haaland claiming the prize.

Unfortunately for Patterson, it means that his career as a starting goalkeeper for the Black Cats is over, and his departure looks imminent.

Having played a pivotal part in their promotion to the Premier League, Patterson has earned huge amounts of praise from Le Bris.

What has Regis Le Bris said about Anthony Patterson this season

Being a backup goalkeeper is an incredibly tough job, yet Le Bris has been extremely positive about Patterson’s attitude towards the situation.

Speaking in a press conference on 22 October, Le Bris said: “The position for a number two goalkeeper is a bit different. So, for Anthony, I think the reality at the moment is really clear for him. I think that is important because we all know the situation. He remains really positive.

“You can enjoy a new situation and learn from a really strong goalkeeper with different qualities. If Robin is better in one area, then maybe he can help Patto become better in that part of his game.

“Then, later in his career – and maybe this season, because we don’t know what might happen – he can be ready to be competitive.”

Should Patterson leave on loan, Sunderland fans will be hoping for him to hit the ground running, and we all know he is more than capable of performing brilliantly in the Championship.
