Left-back heads to Sunderland after Southampton exit, deal on the cards

Sunderland have been very active in the transfer market as they want to avoid relegation from the Premier League come May 2026.

Granit Xhaka is among a host of new signings at the Stadium of Light, with Regis Le Bris keen on strengthening all areas of the pitch to give his side the best chance of retaining their top-flight status.

Currently, the Black Cats sit in seventh place, but tougher challenges are to come in the next few weeks.

Sunderland are also working on a deal for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi ahead of the transfer deadline.

Josh Lett on trial at the Stadium of Light after Southampton exit

Josh Lett, a 20-year-old left-back, had come up the ranks at recently-relegated Southampton.

However, the St Mary’s outfit decided to let him go once his contract expired at the end of June.

The left-back has been a free agent since then, but appears to be keen on joining a new club this summer.

Sunderland have brought Lett on trial and he even played in one of the games for the youth teams.

According to James Copley of the Sunderland Echo, the English defender picked up an injury in a match at Eppleton on Friday against the West Ham Under-21s.

Sunderland may consider offering Josh Lett a contract

If Lett is given a chance to stay in the North-East, he could be mentored by Sunderland’s summer signing Arthur Masuaku, who has experience of playing in numerous leagues, including the Premier League.

During his trial, the Black Cats will want to ensure that the 20-year-old deserves a permanent contract, mainly his ability to integrate into the team’s style of play.

If he does well with the Under-21s then signing Lett would no doubt bolster Le Bris’ future options.

Signing promising young players like Lett is crucial for Sunderland’s recruitment model, which emphasises youth development.

It can also potentially generate revenue through sales.

PSR is a big issue these days and the Mackems will surely want to turn youth into gold more times like they did with Jobe Bellingham.
