Kristjaan Speakman ‘thrilled’ as Sunderland make Matt Young announcement

Sunderland have announced that Matt Young has signed a new deal at the Stadium of Light that will keep him at the club until 2028.

The talented shot-stopper is held in high regard on Wearside with a huge future tipped by Kristjaan Speakman, who was “thrilled” with the extension.

In quotes on Sunderland’s club site (27 November), Speakman said: “We’re pleased with Matty’s progress at present and thrilled that he has extended his contract through to 2028.

“His recent England Under-20 debut at 17 years of age provides a nice reference point of where he is currently and through continued hard work and dedication, he can go on to achieve much more.”

Young is currently out on loan at Salford City.

Matt Young contract extension is good news for Sunderland

Sunderland’s ability to retain their youth players is very promising and it is a testament to the work done by Speakman.

The club’s approach to developing youth makes them an incredibly appealing prospect to young players looking to make the step into senior football.

Having been linked with a move to Man City (inews), news of Young’s contract extension is massive and his future at the club looks bright.

The Black Cats have an excellent record when it comes to developing their own goalkeepers with Jordan Pickford of course the most notable graduate from the youth academy.

Current number one Anthony Patterson is another who has successfully made the step up and with Young at the club until 2028, Sunderland won’t have to look far for a replacement if the former is to leave in the near future.

Of course, Young could still leave the club himself in the future although the new deal will put Sunderland in an excellent position to be able to negotiate.
