Kristjaan Speakman speaks out as Sunderland exit confirmed on Tuesday

Despite the transfer window ending on Monday for Premier League clubs, Sunderland are still working to offload players abroad.

Sunderland’s summer transfer business has raised eyebrows, though a lot of the attention for the last week has been on securing exits for those who have moved to the fringes of the squad.

Patrick Roberts sealed a loan move to Birmingham in the Championship, while several others were afforded moves elsewhere.

With the English window closing at 7 pm on Monday, attention has had to be turned to foreign loans for those in need of game time, with one officially announced on Tuesday, 2 September.

Nazariy Rusyn joins Arka Gdynia on loan

Life has been tough for Nazariy Rusyn since joining Sunderland, and he has been nowhere to be seen since returning from loan at the end of last season.

In 32 appearances for the Black Cats, Rusyn notched on just two occasions, while registering just one assist in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

His lack of game time led him to Hadjuk Split on loan last season, where he failed to find the net in 17 appearances, with a loan move to Arka Gdynia now confirmed for the Ukrainian.

Rusyn’s last two campaigns.

The move was confirmed via Sunderland’s Instagram, with Kristjaan Speakman explaining the decision to part ways temporarily with Rusyn.

He said: “At this stage of his career, it’s vitally important for Naz to be playing games.

“We have worked hard to identify the right opportunity for him this season, and I know he’s looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“He naturally departs with our best wishes, and we wish him well at Arka.”

Who has departed Sunderland this summer?

12 first-team players have left Sunderland this summer, and more could still follow.

Milan Aleksic has also been linked with a loan away from the Stadium of Light, while questions remain over the futures of Abdoullah Ba, Timothee Pembele, Jay Matete and Ian Poveda.

Niall Huggins joined Wycombe on loan, not long before Alan Browne made a switch to Middlesbrough for the season.

Cutting the squad down was a key objective for Sunderland this summer, and they have achieved just that.
