Kevin Phillips excited by Nilson Angulo transfer after what he’s read

Sunderland are looking to finish the 2025/26 campaign strongly after an excellent season so far.

Regis Le Bris’ side secured their return to the top flight last May thanks to a 2-1 win against Sheffield United at Wembley.

With Sunderland on a 12-match unbeaten home Premier League run at the Stadium of Light in hand, the Black Cats have impressed in their first Premier League stint in eight years.

While the January transfer window revolved mainly around departures, the Black Cats secured the signature of exciting Ecuadorian winger Nilson Angulo on deadline day.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has expressed his excitement regarding the signing.

Following Simon Adingra’s loan move to Monaco, Sunderland acted quickly to secure Angulo, who has scored six goals and registered seven assists for Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League this term.

“They’ve (Sunderland) always got a plan in place. They’ve always got a back-up,” Phillips told the Sunderland Echo.

“The lad Nilson is coming in. He’s an unknown entity, but from reading reports on how he looks, a really exciting talent. So, really good business from Sunderland and sensible as well.”

Sunderland travel to North London to face Arsenal this weekend, and fans will be eager to see whether the 22-year-old is handed his debut by Le Bris.

Nilson Angulo shows strength of Sunderland project

Since securing their promotion, the Sunderland project has continued to shift through the gears, with the high-profile arrivals of Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele, Brian Brobbey and more.

With a great mixture of youth and experience, Sunderland have put together a squad that has fired themselves well into the European race, and they aren’t prepared to stop there.

Securing another young talent in Angulo from Belgium’s biggest club is a huge sign of intent, and an important sign of just how highly rated the project on Wearside is.

While European football was never going to be the priority in their first term back in the top-flight, the Black Cats have laid down serious markers to move forward from, and could well claim a continental spot come May.
