Speaking to Mackem News, he said: “He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about that. He’s got a great mentality and has won some of the biggest honours around. But I just think that at the age of 34, his best days are maybe behind him.
“Could he potentially have a player-coach role at Rangers? I don’t know. But as a player Rangers should be looking at players in their early 20s who have room to grow. If Sunderland came calling, I’d prefer to go to Sunderland.”
