Jordan Henderson shares Ajax exit stance as Sunderland homecoming mooted

Jordan Henderson has shared his stance on an Ajax exit after reports of a potential homecoming at Sunderland in January.

Back in October, The Sun reported that the Black Cats were keen on bringing Henderson to Sunderland in what had the potential to be an emotional return.

Concerns emerged over Sunderland’s ability to meet his financial demands but recent comments from Henderson seemed to have ruled out any return to the Stadium of Light for now.

As quoted by Sunderland Echo (16 December), Henderson said: “It’s my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven years old. Then I was in the stands.

“But I just hope I stay here [at Ajax]. I really like it here. I want to help the club to grow further. We are also taking those steps. But I also read it. I don’t even know where all this comes from, because there has been no contact.”

Sunderland need to prioritise attacking signings in January

The signing of Henderson would have been a sublime one at Championship level. His experience matched with his top-level ability that has seen him win almost everything there is in football, would have made him a huge addition to the Black Cats.

However, any deal looks increasingly unlikely and if the midfield is an area that is to be strengthened, the Mackems must begin looking elsewhere and can’t afford to get stuck on a deal.

Attacking signings are an absolute must in January and recent loan links to Louie Barry from Aston Villa (Sunday Mirror) showcase that the club are aware of the deficiencies in the final third.

Despite what has been a poor period since November, the Black Cats are still in the race for automatic promotion and a solid window in January would set them up nicely for what is likely to be a tense second half of the campaign.

That business has to be right though and the Wearsiders will be careful before making any moves.
