Jordan Henderson free transfer green-lit as Sunderland hope emerges

Jordan Henderson could potentially make a spectacular return to Sunderland from Ajax in the ongoing transfer window.

The Black Cats won promotion to the Premier League after beating Sheffield United at Wembley in the play-offs final, and may now have the opportunity to make significant moves this summer.

Jobe Bellingham’s future at the Stadium of Light is uncertain, with German giants Borussia Dortmund pushing for his signature.

Regis Le Bris will arguably be hoping for reinforcements and more top-flight experience in his squad to avoid immediate relegation at the Wearside outfit next season, and the English veteran could be available.

Ajax hope Sunderland make approach for Henderson as free transfer on cards

Ajax are willing to let Henderson leave for free this summer amid interest from Sunderland, according to the Mirror.

The news outlet reports (7 June) that the 34-year-old isn’t in new boss John Heitinga’s plans at the Johan Cruyff Arena, leaving the door open for a return to the Stadium of Light.

It’s been claimed that the Dutch outfit hope the Black Cats make an offer for the England international now that they’ve clarified their stance.

The Eredivisie outfit want to get the midfielder’s wages off their books, but it remains to be seen whether the Wearside outfit can agree terms with him.

Sunderland should push for Henderson transfer at the Stadium of Light

Sunderland should push for Henderson’s return this summer, and given their return to the Premier League, a move may be appealing.

The 34-year-old left the Black Cats for Liverpool in 2011 and went on to captain the Reds to a Champions League and a top-flight title.

While the English veteran confused many after agreeing on a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq, he returned to Europe soon after.

Sunderland could potentially provide Henderson a way back to England, and Le Bris must demand his arrival.

Bellingham’s exit to Dortmund will undoubtedly leave a massive void in the middle of the Park for the Black Cats.

With the Wearside outfit returning to the Premier League, they arguably need to bolster their side with quality players who have top-flight experience.

Henderson might not be in the prime age of his career, but if Thomas Tuchel still trusts the 34-year-old, then so should the hierarchy at Sunderland.

The Englishman’s situation will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
