Jordan Henderson emotional reunion on cards as Sunderland eye transfer coup

Sunderland could be reunited with Jordan Henderson this January as the former academy graduate edges closer to Ajax exit, according to The Sun.

The news outlet reported [5 October] that Henderson could make a swift return to England following tough spells at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and Ajax in Holland.

Several English clubs have been alerted to the possibility, some of whom are in the Premier League. However, Sunderland may hold the upper hand due to the “emotional” aspect of the deal.

Henderson left Liverpool in July of 2023 over fears of his playing time being reduced.

Jordan Henderson deal is a match made in heaven for Sunderland

Taking away the emotional side of a potential deal, Henderson would be a remarkable pickup for Sunderland should they be able to conclude a deal for the highly decorated midfielder.

Following the release of Corry Evans last summer, who has since joined Bradford City, Sunderland have been hoping to add extra experience to their midfield and succeeded with the signing of Alan Browne, who joined on a free from Preston. However, Henderson would blow that signing out of the water.

Albeit at the age of 34, Henderson still has an abundance of quality and leadership properties that would immediately boost Sunderland’s hopes of promotion this season. Added to the fact he knows the club inside out, it would be a major coup.

Henderson has been well-reported to be a Sunderland fan at heart and even attended the 2014 League Cup final between the Black Cats and Manchester City, three years after signing for Liverpool. It is a deal that makes perfect sense.
