Jobe Bellingham backed for Europe move amid excellent Sunderland form

Phil Smith has claimed that Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham could play European football as early as next season after an outstanding start to the campaign.

Bellingham has been one of the most important players under Regis Le Bris this season and is a big reason why the Black Cats find themselves five points clear at the top of the Championship.

Crystal Palace were rumoured to have held an interest in Bellingham throughout the summer (Fabrizio Romano) although he opted to stay on Wearside.

Sunderland Echo journalist Smith thinks he is destined for the top.

Speaking on the Roar podcast (29 October), Smith said: “I can see him (Jobe) playing European football next season. I genuinely think he could, if he stays on this level. I think he is destined to be in a top division next year.”

Sunderland stars Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham are destined for greatness

The duo have formed one of the best midfield partnerships in the Championship last season and have both become almost undroppable for Sunderland.

Bellingham, albeit two years older than Chris Rigg, has developed massively since last season and his newfound role in midfield is seeing him thrive each week.

His ability to score goals as well as his physicality is something that is rarely seen in a player of his age. Arguably the last time it was seen, was when Jude Bellingham was playing his football at Birmingham.

As for Rigg, his performances have been just as impressive. His technical ability matched with his desire to succeed at the club have been key to his high levels of performance.

Both players will undoubtedly be in the spotlight in the coming weeks as the January transfer window approaches with several clubs expected to register an interest in them.

Sunderland will face a tough battle to keep hold of Jobe especially who already looks ready to play Premier League football.

In other Sunderland news, Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku sees his current contract expire at the end of the season and Sunderland must attempt to sign the winger in January.
