Jewison Bennette issues scathing review of Sunderland figure after exit

Jewison Bennette’s time as a Sunderland player came to an end in March.

Sunderland’s promotion from the Championship was a season to remember, though several figures around the club will certainly be forgotten.

Many players were deemed surplus to requirements throughout the campaign, and Bennette was one of them who didn’t feature at all under Regis Le Bris in the league.

In fact, the Costa Rican had a rough time in general on Wearside, and his reasoning behind that paints a clear image as to what he thought about one person in particular.

Kristjaan Speakman called out after Bennette exit admission

When Bennette first arrived on Wearside, fans were excited, but things very quickly turned sour for the teenager.

The Costa Rican international made 18 appearances for the Black Cats in his first season, scoring twice, but then featured just three times in the two seasons following that, before his permanent exit to LNZ Cherkasy.

A loan spell in Greece arrived in the middle of that, where yet again, he featured just three times, and Bennette has since hit out at Kristjaan Speakman for his involvement.

Via Nacion (4 June), he said: “The Sunderland issue was extra-football related. I don’t feel there was anything specific, that I did wrong.

“It was just that the sporting director didn’t want me, there wasn’t a good relationship, he didn’t like me, and I wasn’t going to get an opportunity at Sunderland.”

Since making the move to Cherkasy in March, Bennette, now 20, has made three appearances and is yet to register a goal contribution.

Sunderland recruitment can have its flaws

Recruitment at the Stadium of Light for the large part has been excellent since SPekaman arrived, as showcased by the fact that the Black Cats are set to make a significant profit from the sale of Jobe Bellingham.

However, with the likes of Aboullah Ba, Timothee Pembele and Bennette, it can often be hit-or-miss, and that can’t happen this summer.

If Sunderland are to survive in the Premier League, the right decisions need to be made in the coming months, and there will be no margin for error as they look to break the trend of newly promoted sides.
