Jenson Seelt transfer latest at Sunderland ahead of 1 September deadline
Jenson Seelt looked comfortable in his first Premier League start in the 3-0 win over West Ham.
The 22-year-old picked up an injury in the victory but quickly returned to action in Sunderland’s 2-0 defeat to Burnley.
Seelt struggled to contain Lyle Foster against the Clarets at Turf Moor, and several new recruits at the back have put his future on Wearside in doubt.
It had been initially suggested that the Dutchman could join Italian side Hellas Verona on loan this summer, but interest elsewhere is starting to grow.

NEC Nijmegen interested in signing Jenson Seelt
Seelt’s injury problems last season meant he struggled to nail down a starting place in the Mackems’ starting side.
He appears to be following a similar injury trend this season after picking up a knock against West Ham, and Regis Le Bris could look to loan him elsewhere to toughen up.
According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, NEC Nijmegen are interested in signing Seelt on loan.
- Seelt started against West Ham, but went off injured
- He went on to feature and struggle vs Burnley
- With him now fit, Le Bris must choose between him and Alderete
The Mackems are yet to decide on if they want to let the 22-year-old go, but are still looking to add another defender to their ranks.
He also confirmed that no talks have been held with Verona over the defender leaving on loan.
The arrival of Omar Alderete from Getafe means the Mackems have depth outside of Seelt, with Nordi Mukiele and Dan Ballard.
How many games has Jenson Seelt missed through injury?
Sunderland can’t afford to keep Seelt if he isn’t going to play, whether that be due to injury or due to him not being good enough for a full Premier League season in the spotlight.
Seelt’s injury record:
- 2023/24 season: Missed 33 games due to knee surgery (from 27 March 2024 to 31 December 2024)
- 2021/22 season: Missed 6 games due to a hamstring injury (from 20 August 2021 to 30 September 2021)
Le Bris will worry that in such an important season that Seelt’s costly knee injury could return, and therefore a loan move seems to be the most sensible option.
