Jenson Seelt return timeline emerges in Sunderland boost
Jenson Seelt will feature for the Sunderland Under-21s side on Wednesday as he looks to step up his rehabilitation from an injury sustained 10 months ago.
Sunderland were handed a boost in the shape of Chris Mepham, with it revealed by Regis Le Bris that he will be fit to play against Derby County despite an injury scare against Burnley, and another player could soon return.
Seelt, having been spotted in training at the back end of last year, is due to return to action with the U21s side when they face Benfica on 22 January, as confirmed by Le Bris.
As quoted on the Sunderland club site [20 January], the Frenchman said: “Jenson is training fully with us now and will play the first part of the game against Benfica in the U21s fixture on Wednesday evening.”
Ian Poveda will also make a return after he sustained an injury in the reverse fixture against Derby
Jenson Seelt return could be massive for Sunderland
Seelt showed certain signs of promise upon signing for the Black Cats before suffering an unfortunate cruciate ligament injury that has ruled him out for nearly a year, and has left Sunderland short of options at the back.
His ability to play across several defensive positions saw him utilised regularly last season in a campaign that didn’t end well.
However, with the current form and morale around Wearside, Seelt could have a big role to play in the remainder of the campaign with the lack of options defensively.

Aji Alese was the most recent to be ruled out, with Niall Huggins still sidelined to leave just Dennis Cirkin and Trai Hume as natural full-backs.
Providing the Dutchman can get back up to speed relatively quickly, it could be only a matter of weeks until he is able to return to first-team action and play a part in what many hope will be a promotion-winning campaign.
In other Sunderland news, this player has a crucial role to play under Mel Reay.
