Jenson Jones in line for Sunderland opportunity after impressive Premier League 2 form
Jenson Jones is one of Sunderland’s brightest prospects, and it may not be long until he is integrated into the first team more regularly.
Jones has already made a senior debut for Sunderland, having played 45 minutes for the Black Cats in their Carabao Cup defeat to Huddersfield earlier this season.
First team minutes since then have been limited for Sunderland’s youngsters, but their impressive form in the Premier League 2 could put them in good standing for more as we approach the latter stage of the season.
And towards the top of the list of players in line for a chance under Regis Le Bris is Jones, who has shone for the Under-21s throughout the campaign.
How has Jenson Jones fared for Sunderland Under-21s?
Jones impressed in pre-season for Sunderland, so for him to have carried that form into the league campaign is no surprise.
The 19-year-old has started 11 times for the Black Cats in Premier League 2, while also having registered an assist, though his deeper stats are the ones to spark intrigue.
Jones has completed 16 dribbles from full-back this season, with a completion rate of 64 per cent, which places him in the top 20 per cent of players in the division.
On top of that, he has created 14 chances, with two of those having been deemed as big chances.
| Stats per 90 | |
| Dribbles completed | 1.49 |
| Chances created | 1.30 |
| Cross accuracy | 40% |
| Duels won | 5.76 |
With 2.23 tackles per 90 as well as 1.95 interceptions, his defensive capabilities have also been on show for Graeme Murty’s side.
When could Jones get another Sunderland chance?
Quite frankly, it may not be long.
Reinildo is out injured, while Dennis Cirkin has only just returned from his injury, meaning options in that area of the pitch are stretched.
Should the above duo remain fit for the rest of the season, then Jones will likely have to wait for the next campaign to make his mark, but should those efforts fail, we could see him before the end of the current season.
Either way, the Black Cats rate Jones very highly, and providing he can stay injury-free, he certainly will get his chance.
