Jamie Carragher blown away by ‘unbelievable’ Sunderland and Newcastle reveal he’s told live on Sky Sports

Sunderland were magnificent in their Wear-Tyne derby victory over Newcastle United, but Jamie Carragher revealed his shock at one statistic after the contest.

Nick Woltemade’s own goal was the difference as Sunderland secured a 1-0 win against Newcastle at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies striker headed in at the wrong end just after half-time, sparking wild scenes on Wearside.

Sunderland faced a late barrage of pressure from Eddie Howe’s side, but dealt with everything the visitors threw at them to pick up a huge three points.

Sunderland equal Newcastle record in Wear-Tyne derby

It was the first time Sunderland had faced the Magpies in a league game since 2016, and they continued their impressive recent record against their rivals.

The Black Cats are now 10 games unbeaten in Premier League Wear-Tyne fixtures, equalling Newcastle’s own best run in the derby.

Upon hearing that Sunderland had hit the milestone, former Liverpool defender Carragher couldn’t hide his surprise.

Speaking live on Sky Sports, he said: “It’s unbelievable. That’s what Sunderland needed when down in the dumps.

We know they don’t play each other often, but I’m sure that’ll change over the next three or four years. At some stage Newcastle will get the three points.”

Newcastle have not beaten Sunderland in the Premier League since 2011, over 15 years ago.

In that time, the Black Cats have won seven Wear-Tyne derbies, with the spoils being shared on three other occasions.

How did Sunderland manage to beat Newcastle?

Newcastle were massive favourites coming into the game against Sunderland, but Le Bris’ side outworked their rivals at the Stadium of Light.

In an intimidating atmosphere, the Magpies couldn’t cope with the aggression shown by the hosts and failed to create a single meaningful chance.

The duo worked perfectly together, Xhaka dictating the play from deep, with Sadiki’s tireless running and incredible energy giving the Newcastle players no time to rest.

Sunderland were well deserving of their derby day victory, and now find themselves four points clear of their rivals in the Premier League table.
