Jack Whittaker in line for just reward at Sunderland as stats showcase potential

Jack Whittaker is said to be in talks over extending his deal at Sunderland, having impressed for the Under-21s this season.

The Black Cats have had another excellent campaign, though with plenty still to play for, Regis Le Bris has been afforded very few opportunities to hand minutes to their youth.

A Carabao Cup defeat to Huddersfield was the only real opportunity that presented itself, with the likes of Jenson Jones and Harrison Jones featuring.

With that said, Sunderland still have a whole host of youngsters to be excited about at the Academy of Light.

And after the season he has had, Whittaker is certainly one of them, and that form is set to be rewarded.

Jack Whittaker in line for new deal at Sunderland

According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have opened contract talks with Whittaker, who has had a solid campaign for the Under-21s.

On top of that, he has created 29 chances in the league, which places him among the top 5.3 per cent of wingers in the division.

Only 9.2 per cent of them have completed more dribbles than the 19-year-old, who has been a constant thorn in the sides of the teams the Black Cats have faced this season.

Pre-season plans may be crucial for Whittaker among others

Sunderland are unlikely to qualify for Europe as of right now, but it remains mathematically possible.

And while that is the case, Le Bris will stick with his tried and tested players in a bid to make that a reality, though that will also mean limited chances for the youth stars.

That is only likely to change in pre-season, where the Black Cats will have to make decisions over where their future lies, with several loan exits possible.

The likes of Matty Young and Timur Tuteriov have thrived in their loan moves this season, and Sunderland will be hoping for similar success next season.
