Is controversial Mitrovic move worthwhile for Sunderland after Premier League update?

Sunderland are striving to bolster their forward line ahead of the impending Premier League campaign.

Regis Le Bris has Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor within his ranks, but question marks hang over their top-flight credentials.

Chelsea striker Marc Guiu is closing in on a loan move to Sunderland as he seeks regular first-team football.

Now, an intriguing proposition has opened up involving former Newcastle United hitman Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic offered to Premier League clubs

Guiu is set to undergo his Sunderland medical ahead of a transfer to the Stadium of Light.

However, Guiu’s flight to the North East was cancelled, meaning he is facing a delay in completing his switch to Wearside.

While it is expected that the Spaniard will still move, the Black Cats could turn to another striker.

That is because Al Hilal forward Mitrovic has been offered to Premier League clubs, according to reports.

The 30-year-old has been in prolific form in the Saudi Pro League and has notched 68 goals in 79 appearances.

Mitrovic sealed a move to the Gulf State in 2023 after a fruitful spell with Fulham, where he totaled 111 goals.

Of course, the Serbia international represented Newcastle and called himself a ‘Geordie boy’, via The Standard (9 February 2023).

Mitrovic would be controversial Sunderland signing

It does not need to be explained why Mitrovic would be a controversial signing for the Black Cats.

However, if reports are true, then a deal is something that must be debated, given his record in front of goal.

The Serbian is a profile of forward that the Wearsiders do not possess, and his physicality and aerial dominance would be welcomed.

Furthermore, the 30-year-old boasted an impressive record towards the end of his spell in England, netting 57 league goals in his last two seasons.

However, most of those goals came in the Championship, and Mitrovic has only scored more than 10 Premier League goals on one occasion.

Steven Caldwell was the last player to switch Tyneside for Wearside after completing a move in 2004.

Since then, players have only gone in the other direction, including DeAndre Yedlin and Javi Manquillo (after loan switches), and of course, Jack Colback.

While Mitrovic is a proven goalscorer, he may not be worth the hassle for Sunderland.
