Sunderland are beginning to falter due to the pressure that had come with facing opponents as the top side, according to Ian Darke.

The Black Cats have drawn each of their last five Championship games and take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday night [29 November] in a huge clash.

Regis Le Bris' side surprised many by soaring to the top of the league table but now sit fourth, albeit two points adrift of the summit with their young squad.

"They're not in a great spot at the moment and maybe the excitement has died down," TV commentator Darke exclusively told Mackem News.

"But it is a young team and I think maybe they're just being caught up. I thought they'd go well but not be right up at the top. Maybe they just need the oxygen masks a little bit.

"I saw it with Portsmouth, my team, in League One last season. Everyone raises their game against you when you're top of the table. Sunderland will probably rediscover their form, but I'd be surprised if they were in the top two come the end of the season."

Sunderland aiming to rediscover form at Sheffield United

Sunderland have at least claimed draws as opposed to losing any of their recent matches, but have now not won since beating Oxford United 2-0 on 26 October.

The motivation at Bramall Lane under the lights will be the potential to leapfrog Sheffield United with all three points; lose and they will be five behind the Blades.

They do maintain a degree of breathing space, with fifth-placed Watford unable to catch them this weekend as they slot in four points behind.
