‘I hope there’s no children here’ – Kieran Trippier in sweary Sunderland rant

Sunderland’s bitter rivalry with Newcastle United will be reignited in the upcoming season.

The Black Cats are now back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, and their relegation that year coincided with Newcastle’s return to the top flight after a year away.

Newcastle and Sunderland have not been in the same division together since, and this has meant the Tyne-Wear derby has only happened on rare occasions in the cups.

The derby will return in the Premier League next season – and Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has now gotten carried away.

Trippier slams Sunderland fans

Trippier was asked about the return of the Tyne-Wear derby during Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia, and he did not hold back.

In a foul-mouthed answer, the right-back claimed that he would love to beat Sunderland again, after he received abuse during the last derby in the FA Cup in 2024.

Sunderland fell to a 3-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light with Trippier playing, but it was still an intimidating atmosphere which clearly rattled the Newcastle players.

Speaking at a media event on the tour, Trippier apologised in advance for his language, before explaining why he was excited at the prospect of facing Sunderland.

“I hope there’s no children here, but the amount of s**t I got off them last time, I can’t wait to beat them again, to be honest with you,” he stated.

“I’m looking forward to playing them. I think it’s good for the city as well. It’s good to see them promoted, but it will be nice to see them get relegated as well.”

Sunderland can end 10-year drought v Newcastle

Sunderland and Newcastle have not faced each other in a league game since the 2015-16 season, and the Black Cats came out on top overall.

Sam Allardyce led Sunderland to a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light, with Steven Fletcher among the goalscorers, before a 1-1 draw in the return leg at Newcastle helped contribute to their relegation.

The FA Cup meeting last year was the only time the two sides have faced each other since, and there was plenty of animosity as extra crowd control measures had to be taken.

The first meeting next season will come in December as Sunderland host Newcastle first up, before travelling to St James’ Park in March in what could be a decisive fixture for both teams.

New signing Granit Xhaka will certainly be looking forward to the games, as the hard-tackling midfielder has a positive record against Newcastle from his time at Arsenal.
