How much Sunderland will pay for Nordi Mukiele as defender on his way to England

Sunderland are continuing to splash the cash with a deal now agreed for Nordi Mukiele.

Mukiele is set to become the Black Cats’ 12th new arrival this summer, with Fabrice Hawkins reporting via X on Friday, 15 August, that Sunderland and Paris Saint-Germain had reached an agreement for the transfer of the defender.

Perhaps the biggest signing of the summer at the Stadium of Light, Granit Xhaka, has previously spoken about Sunderland’s newest recruit Mukiele after playing with him at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, what is perhaps of more interest to the Sunderland faithful is how much this deal is set to cost Regis Le Bris’ side, with that information now being reported.

Sunderland to pay £9.5million fee plus add-ons for Mukiele

Mukiele will arrive as an experienced defender who can play both at right-back and in the centre of defence for Le Bris.

The Black Cats have splashed the cash this summer on some expensive recruits, such as Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, and Enzo Le Fee. However, Mukiele will arrive for a slightly more modest fee.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X on 15 August, the 27-year-old is on his way to England to sign his contract as a new Sunderland player.

The Mackems have already agreed personal terms with the Frenchman and will pay an initial £9.5million fee to PSG.

However, that cost could rise, with Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reporting via X that the deal also includes £2.5m worth of add-ons.

Therefore, it remains to be seen what the total cost will end up being, but it appears the maximum value of the transfer will be £12m, a drop in the ocean when considering that the Black Cats have spent £100m-plus on new players this summer.

Do Sunderland need further signings?

Sunderland have bolstered their options in plenty of positions across their squad this summer.

Up until recently, it felt as though defence was still an area of concern for Le Bris.

However, after bringing in Omar Alderete and now Mukiele, it feels as though Sunderland might now have enough depth at the back, and it looks as though their recruitment drive could soon start to wind down.

While there will likely still be a few more additions before the end of August, it would appear as though the bulk of the business has been done, and if the window were to shut now, it would be hard to find an unhappy supporter at the Stadium of Light.

The last six teams to be promoted to the Premier League have all gone straight back down, and Sunderland will feel as though they’ve done enough to put a stop to that trend this season.
