How much Omar Alderete could cost Sunderland as agreement is reached
Sunderland look set to make Omar Alderete their 11th signing of the summer.
The centre-back made 36 appearances for Getafe last season across all competitions. Now, it appears that Alderete is set to sign for Sunderland after an agreement was reached.
This news followed the arrival of Arthur Masuaku, who joined Sunderland on Sunday.
Alderete is expected to travel to England in the next few days and sign a contract until 2029.
However, Regis Le Bris will likely have to pay a pretty penny to secure his services.

Omar Alderete likely to cost Sunderland £18m+
If Sunderland do secure the signing of Alderete, it will not be cheap.
According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo via X on 9 August, the Black Cats are set to pay £10.83million to acquire the centre-back.
However, the 28-year-old is likely to also demand a decent wage increase to move to England.
- Sunderland’s pre-season defensive concerns saw the need for a new defender increase
According to Capology on 10 August, the centre-back is currently earning £20,106 per week at Getafe.
However, these wages could easily double to around £40,000-a-week if the move to Sunderland were completed.
Therefore, across a four-year deal, this would cost £7.36m, without including any additional bonuses or clauses in the contract.
As a result, Le Bris is at a minimum set to spend around £18.19m on Alderete when including his contract demands on top of the transfer fee itself.
Alderete vs Dan Ballard
Coming into the Sunderland side, Alderete will have to compete with the Black Cats’ current backline for a spot in the first team.
Compared to Dan Ballard, Alderete tops the centre-back in multiple defensive stats according to Fbref on August 10.
Stats for the 2024/25 campaign per 90 minutes | Omar Alderete | Dan Ballard |
Tackles | 1.30 | 0.88 |
Interceptions | 1.21 | 0.72 |
Blocks | 1.15 | 0.72 |
Clearances | 7.30 | 6.39 |
Aerial duels won | 3.06 | 5.03 |
This is particularly impressive considering the defender was competing in La Liga last season, whereas Ballard was obviously in the Championship.
Therefore, there is a big possibility that Alderete will be a considerable upgrade on the Black Cats’ current centre-backs, which will put them in a better position to survive the drop.
Hopefully, Le Bris can now focus on signing a striker, with Sunderland currently linked with Matthis Abline.
