
‘He Is Ridiculous’ – Journo lauds Sunderland teen Tommy Watson after outrageous moment
Sunderland youngster Tommy Watson has been branded “ridiculous” following his latest impressive moment.
Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley posted on X [11 September] with the club’s official Academy account post of Watson’s goal against Athletic Club de Bilbao for the Black Cats’ Under-21s.
Watson, 18, scored and thoroughly impressed at the Stadium of Light, following on from an encouraging pre-season spent with the first team, now regularly named in the senior matchday squad by Regis Le Bris.
Copley’s post accompanying the goal video simply stated: “He is ridiculous.”

Sunderland have garnered all kinds of praise in the past few years under the current regime, for their focus on youth development.
There is a pathway at the club for youngsters to excel – the team’s last outing against Portsmouth witnessed excellent performances from three youngsters starting the match: Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham and Eliezer Mayenda.
Watson has been highly rated internally for years, and considered to be one of – if not the best – in his age group as a scholar. Now a fully fledged professional, the world is his oyster as he continues to have a huge impact going forward for Graeme Murty’s U21s.

This particular clash with Athletic Club was part of the club’s group in the International Cup, qualified for through Sunderland reaching the PL2 play-off final last year, Watson a significant contributor.
Very much in the mould of recently departed star Jack Clarke in both looks and style of play – the goal a prime example – there would be little shock if he were to enjoy the same career trajectory Clarke recently has.
