Harrison Jones: Sunderland’s next steps examined as D-day approaches
Harrison Jones is out of contract at Sunderland this summer, though it’s believed the Black Cats have the option to extend it by a year.
Sunderland’s youth approach has been a huge part of their success over the last few years, with plenty of it coming directly from the Academy of Light.
Several academy stars have made the step-up to the first team and have more than played their part in their rise from League One.
Jones has been one of those to have had some access under Regis Le Bris, having made six appearances across all competitions last season.
However, gametime has been limited for Jones this season, casting doubt over his immediate future on Wearside.
What comes next for Harrison Jones?
Jones has again impressed for Sunderland’s Under-21s, with six goals and three assists in the 15 appearances he has made this season.
It’s a similar return to what he managed last season, showcasing his ability to remain consistent.
| 24-25 | Jones Under-21 record | 25-26 |
| 22 | Games | 15 |
| 5 | Goals | 6 |
| 6 | Assists | 3 |
However, given the fact that he turns 22 in December, Sunderland need to make a decision on his future, which is unlikely to be in the Premier League.
Despite his age, Jones has never had the luxury of a loan move, and if the chance emerges this summer to change that, the Black Cats should take it.

With it believed they have the option to extend his contract, it would give them one final chance to assess his true ability before deciding on his long-term future.

Sunderland must make use of loan system this summer
Jones isnt the only star to have shone for the Under-21s, but nor is he the only one who would benefit massively from a loan move in the EFL.
Jneson Jones is another who looks ready to make the step to senior football, and the loan market often presents the perfect opportunity to achieve that.
Sunderland will be busy again this summer, and a large part of that may be finding suitable places for their younger players to play their football and continue their development.
