Habib Diarra snubs Leeds for Sunderland – here’s why

Habib Diarra looks set to become Sunderland’s second major signing this summer.

The Senegalese international emerged as one of the best players in Ligue 1 last season as he helped Strasbourg reach Europe.

As a result, Diarra had been linked to multiple clubs, including Leeds United, with the midfielder being a wanted man this summer.

However, Sunderland have now won the race for Diarra after agreeing a record-breaking £30.3 million fee.

Diarra attracted by Sunderland’s ambitious project

The imminent signing of Diarra has certainly excited Sunderland fans.

The midfielder is likely to be a game-changer for the Black Cats as they aim to survive in the Premier League after their playoff victory.

Speculation on when the transfer will become official rose on Saturday, with a private jet landing at Teesside Airport.

However, many football fans are also wondering why Diarra chose to sign for Regis Le Bris’ side, given that the Black Cats are many people’s favourites for relegation.

Now, L’Equipe (28 June) has confirmed that Diarra was convinced to join Sunderland thanks to the ambitious project led by Le Bris.

This is backed further as the French outlet reports that the midfielder will sign a five-year deal upon the completion of the transfer.

Diarra is a statement signing from Le Bris

It is no secret that Sunderland have been tipped to struggle this season.

The loss of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund only cemented these beliefs, with many insisting that relegation was all but certain.

However, Diarra signing for the Black Cats is no doubt a statement from Le Bris, proving that Sunderland are ready to fight for their place in the top division.

The addition of the 21-year-old is likely to be a game-changer at the Stadium of Light, and he could well prove to be the difference between survival and relegation.
