Gus Poyet moots ‘Massive’ Sunderland problem ahead of play-off final – Exclusive
Gus Poyet has warned Sunderland about the potential danger that awaits them in the summer transfer window.
Sunderland could be a Premier League club for the first time in nine years this weekend, though they will have to find a way to get past Sheffield United in the play-off final if that is to be the case.
Saturday’s clash at Wembley promises to be a special occasion, and it will be one that the Black Cats are hoping ends in success.
However, as soon as their fate is decided, attention will turn to the summer window, and regardless of which league they are in, Poyet thinks they may be in for a tough time.

Sunderland must deal carefully this summer
Jobe Bellingham has already been linked with an imminent move away from the Stadium of Light, and interest in several others will be inevitable.
If Sunderland achieve promotion, their chances of retaining their talent will be boosted, but Poyet has highlighted the problems they will face in the coming months.
Team | Position | Goal Difference | Points |
Sheffield United | 3 | 27 | 90 |
Sunderland | 4 | 14 | 76 |
Speaking to Mackem News, courtesy of BetBrain, Poyet said: “I think it’s an investment recruitment system. It’s a different approach. I think that sometimes you can make more mistakes because the players still don’t know how much they’re going to give you.
“But at the same time, for the coach, it’s great because the players are coming with an attitude to learn and to be part of the team. So you’ve got the two sides of the thing. It’s dangerous in the long term because of how you replace them.
“Imagine that Sunderland gets to the Premier League, yeah, and these players leave. And you not only need to reinforce the team because you are going to the Premier League, which is a massive difference, but also you lose your best players, the ones who maybe can play in the Premier League. So you’ve got two problems there.”

Le Bris needs to be backed regardless of Saturday’s outcome
If Sunderland win at Wembley, recruitment is going to be crucial this summer. If Sunderland lose at Wembley, recruitment is still going to be just as crucial.
Regardless of the outcome, this summer will likely provide the Black Cats with their biggest test yet when it comes to retaining their key players and bringing in new talent.
However, for now, all focus will be on securing promotion back to the Premier League.
