Guiu to undergo Sunderland medical – What does it mean for Mayenda and Isidor?
Sunderland have strengthened almost every position ahead of their return to the Premier League.
While it was not known what approach the Black Cats would take, they have laid out their ambition for all to see.
Now, the Wearsiders are closing in on a striker, with Marc Guiu nearing a move to the Stadium of Light.
Regis Le Bris already has Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor in that position, so what does it mean for them?

Sunderland close in on Guiu loan transfer
Xavi talked up Guiu during his time at Barcelona before he sealed a switch to Chelsea last summer.
The 19-year-old found opportunities sparse in West London last season, but made a significant contribution in the Europa Conference League.
Guiu was compared to Luis Suarez for his performance against Shamrock Rovers, when he scored a first-half hat trick.
The Spaniard went on to score six goals in the competition, which the Blues went on to win.
Marc Guiu’s 2024/25 Conference League statistics | Total |
Appearances (starts) | 7 (4) |
Goals | 6 |
Expected goals (xG) | 3.25 |
Goal conversion | 32% |
Big chances created | 1 |
Now, the forward will fly into the North East on Sunday afternoon (3 August) to complete his medical at Sunderland, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie via X (3 August).
The journalist reports that he will undergo his medical in the next 24 hours, with the Black Cats agreeing to a season-long loan with Chelsea.
What does Guiu’s arrival mean for Mayenda and Isidor?
The Sunderland duo had differing campaigns in the Championship, meaning neither is a guaranteed starter.
Isidor often showed moments of brilliance, but after signing permanently in the New Year, he looked devoid of confidence.
As for Mayenda, he made an impact in patches and delivered at crucial moments, scoring twice in the play-offs.
Neither have flourished in pre-season, which may mean Guiu will lead the line in the Premier League opener against West Ham.
- Guiu was prolific in the Conference League, but is inexperienced
- Mayenda is physical and has a quick turn of pace
- Isidor can finish with finesse, but has lacked confidence
However, both are versatile and Le Bris could use them on the wing, although Simon Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi stand in their way.
Guiu, Mayenda, and Isidor have two pre-season matches left to impress Le Bris and stake their claim for a starting berth.
It feels as though Guiu will be given the nod, but a place is very much to play for.
