Granit Xhaka: Sunderland award adds credibility to Peter Schmeichel claim

Granit Xhaka was named the Player of the Year at Sunderland this week.

Sunderland’s season has fizzled out to some extent, but the fact that they are potentially just one win away from re-entering the European spots says a lot about how the campaign has gone.

Many had the Black Cats nailed on to finish rock bottom, but with safety secured with games to spare, that prediction was wide of the mark.

And as for why the season has gone so well, Regis Le Bris deserves his credit, as do the likes of Xhaka, Robin Roefs and Dan Ballard, all of whom have played an integral role.

Xhaka was named as Sunderland’s Player of the Season for his contributions over the campaign, which had also seen him mooted for a move to Man United.

Eyebrows were raised when Xhaka made the move to Sunderland, but it became apparent very quickly why he did so.

He wanted a new challenge, and he has passed it with flying colours at the Stadium of Light, with seven goal involvements to show for it.

On top of that, Xhaka has created 33 chances this season, with eight of them having been deemed as big chances, placing him in the top 8.3 per cent of players for his position.

No midfielder has completed more than his 135 long passes in the Premier League, while only 10.7 per cent of players have had more touches than him, showcasing the importance he holds in the middle of the pitch.

But that hasn’t gone unnoticed, and in the eyes of Peter Schmeichel, it makes him the perfect candidate to take over from Casemiro at Man United.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, the former United star said: “I have one, maybe controversial in thinking, but I think we should go and sign Xhaka.

“When I look and see what Xhaka has done at Sunderland, he is the reason why they are absolutely amazing.

“His leadership qualities are great, he can play 80 per cent of the games, and he is a very good player. I know he can do it.”

Sunderland may have Xhaka exit fears, but they won’t last long

Given the season he has had, regardless of his age, Xhaka will certainly attract interest.

The former Arsenal captain has showcased that he still has what it takes to thrive at the highest level, and for a team that has exceeded expectations.

But Sunderland are building something special, and with Xhaka at the heart of it, he is almost certain to want to stick around and see how it plays out.

Xhaka has been one of the biggest difference-makers at the Stadium of Light this seasoin, and that will be reflected by Sunderland’s transfer stance on him this summer.
