Granit Xhaka could miss Newcastle clash after what happened in Sunderland draw vs Arsenal

Sunderland look likely to be without Granit Xhaka for one of their upcoming fixtures.

Sunderland already look safe from relegation, with some focus shifting to what the new ambitions could be after such a strong start to the season.

Sunderland’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal was a momentous occasion, and yet another clash which saw the Black Cats move one point closer to cementing their spot in the top flight.

Xhaka has been crucial to that success, but his role in the team could be halted in one of their next few fixtures.

Suspension looms for two key Sunderland stars

Aside from Sunderland’s defensive improvement this season, the Black Cats have also turned into a team that are horrible to play against, but for good reasons.

Experience has played a part, with the Wearsiders not afraid to foul if the situation warrants it, and both Xhaka and Noah Sadiki have been a part of that.

However, as a result, both players are on four yellow cards, and their next one would see them suspended for a game.

Fulham are the opponents up next for Sunderland, and if either of them picks up a card, they would miss the following home clash with Bournemouth.

This rule lasts until the 19th game of the season, and with a run of fixtures against Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle after the Cherries, this Fulham clash may actually be the best time for them to succumb to suspension.

Should the fifth yellow card arrive against Man City, the suspension would come into play for their clash with Newcastle.

Sunderland absolutely need Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki vs Newcastle

The Black Cats have relied on their midfield duo on several occasions this season, and the Tyne-Wear Derby in December will be no different.

A lot of the game will be played in the middle of the park, and with Xhaka and Sadiki, Sunderland have a great chance of winning the battle.

With Habib Diarra potentially set to return for the Newcastle game, those concerns may be alleviated somewhat, but the absence would still be felt.
