Graham Potter drops major Nayef Aguerd transfer hint amid Sunderland defensive hunt
Nayef Aguerd has been linked with a move to Sunderland this summer.
Sunderland are expected to be busy in the final 24 hours of the transfer window, with several outgoings and a couple of incomings.
Dan Ballard’s injury isn’t a major concern for Sunderland, though they remain in the market for another centre-back.
Jhon Lucumi has been heavily linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, as has Aguerd, with a massive hint dropping on his future at West Ham.

Nayef Aguerd absent from West Ham squad vs Nottingham Forest
Aguerd featured in West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, just as he did in the following clash against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.
However, the Moroccan was nowhere to be seen for the Hammers in the clash with Nottingham Forest on Sunday, and with Aguerd having been linked with a move to Sunderland, those rumours are only going to intensify.
- Joined West Ham in 2022
- Made 58 appearances in all competitions up until 2024
- Joined Real Sociedad on loan
- Could now leave West Ham permanently
Regis Le Bris wants to add a left-footed defender to his squad before Monday’s 7pm deadline, and it seems as though the Hammers will be open to Aguerd’s exit.
As to whether a deal materialised, it will depend on the price set by West Ham, who invested £30million in the centre-back from Rennes back in 2022.
Given his experience, Aguerd would be a good signing for Sunderland, though they will certainly have several targets in mind.

Sunderland simply have to prioritise attacking signings
At this stage in the window, it is very hard to conclude transfer business, unless selling clubs have already found a replacement.
A centre back would be a good addition for the Black Cats, but after it emerged that Chelsea could recall Marc Guiu from loan, it’s clear that focus needs to be placed on forward arrivals.
Sunderland need to sign another winger, especially with Patrick Roberts linked with an exit from the Stadium of Light.
Lois Openda has been mooted for a move to Sunderland, and that could be another one to keep an eye on over the next 24 hours.
