Carlton Palmer hails ‘outstanding’ Wilson Isidor form at Sunderland

Carlton Palmer believes that Sunderland should have one eye on promotion before considering their right to activate a buy-clause in Wilson Isidor’s loan deal.

The Frenchman has got off to a flying start on Wearside with three league goals to his name after adding to his tally against Hull on Sunday (20 October).

Isidor arrived on loan from Zenit and the club do hold an option to make the deal a permanent one however Palmer believes the club should hold off on any decision until they know their fate for next season.

In an interview with Football League World, Palmer said: “He’s been in outstanding form, and in seven Championship games so far, he’s scored three goals. They’ve got him on a season-long loan, and since they lost Ross Stewart, they’ve missed somebody who can score goals for them.

“I don’t think Sunderland should look to activate that buy clause yet, they do have that option to buy him, and I always say when you take a player on loan you should take him with a view that you’ve got to buy him because if the player does well on loan, you don’t want to then be haggling and negotiating at the end of that to get him signed.

“If he continues this great form and Sunderland continue in that vein, then of course it is an option for him. But also, Sunderland will be having one eye on the fact that, if they continue the way they are, they’re going to be promoted to the Premier League and if they get promoted, will he be one of those players who can play in the Premier League?”

Sunderland need Wilson Isidor to maintain goalscoring level

If Regis Le Bris’ side are to achieve promotion, they need to have someone they can rely on to score goals.

In previous seasons, they’ve had Jack Clarke however since his departure, others are going to have to step up and take responsibility.

Isidor is perhaps the main man for that. With three goals to his name so far, he has showcased his ability as a clinical finisher and his all-round play has been impressive.

The Frenchman is currently tied with Romaine Mundle as the club’s top scorer.

His goal against Hull City was a demonstration of what he can offer this season, ending a remarkably powerful run with a delicate chip over the onrushing goalkeeper to secure all three points for the Black Cats.

Isidor has already been a hit with Sunderland supporters but that reputation will only grow if he can keep getting himself into goalscoring positions and making them count.

In other Sunderland news, Sunderland rising star Chris Rigg is just two goals away from surpassing the five that Gareth Bale scored in the EFL before turning 18.
