Gary Neville shares what he noticed about Sunderland fans after 1-0 derby win vs Newcastle

Sunderland fans once again proved their value in the Wear-Tyne derby.

Nick Woltemade had a day to forget on Sunday as his own goal earned Sunderland a 1-0 victory over Newcastle, extending their unbeaten run against the Magpies in the Premier League.

The Black Cats haven’t lost a league game to Newcastle since 2011, with their latest win now making it ten in a row without defeat.

While the game at the Stadium of Light wasn’t the most exciting from a neutral perspective, it was as passionate as ever from the stands, and Gary Neville was stunned by what he was watching after the full-time whistle.

Sunderland fans do themselves proud yet again

The Stadium of Light has been a fortress this season, and that is demonstrated by the fact that Sunderland are one of three English clubs yet to lose a league game at home in the current campaign.

Regis Le Bris’ side have the fourth-best home record in the Premier League, with five wins and three draws from their eight encounters.

The reason behind that? The fans.

Against Newcastle in particular, the Mackems cheered every tackle, pass and decision that went their way, and the players clearly absorbed the energy from the stands and put it to good use on the pitch.

However, the Black Cats’ unwavering support didn’t stop at the full-time whistle, with Neville blown away by what he was witnessing across Sunderland after the game.

“Sunderland deserved to win,” Neville said. “It was an incredible atmosphere, before the game it was sensational, when the goal went in it was sensational.

“I was stuck in the car park for 40 minutes afterwards, but the Sunderland fans, when I left, I could still hear them chanting and singing in their thousands.

“What a great day, a great night for them.”

Neville hilariously corrects ‘fatal’ Sunderland error he made

Sunderland’s encounters with Newcastle are always fiery, and it was no different at the Stadium of Light this time around, even if the visitors lacked the fight themselves.

Neville was clear when making that point, not long before correcting himself for an error in what he said on the day.

“It was great to be at my first Wear-Tyne derby,” Neville said with a smile on his face.

“Wear-Tyne derby, don’t get it wrong, Gary. Got it wrong once yesterday, and that was a fatal mistake.”

With that said, Sunderland will already be eagerly awaiting the Tyne-Wear derby in March, when they can get yet another result over their neighbours in their own backyard.
