Gary Lineker might just be spot on with Alan Shearer theory after Sunderland drama vs Arsenal

Alan Shearer must be fuming at Sunderland’s form, as Gary Lineker has taken a hilarious dig at the ex-Newcastle striker.

Sunderland’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Saturday has steered the Black Cats another point clear of Newcastle after 11 Premier League games.

Arsenal were the favourites to beat Sunderland, understandably, but Mikel Arteta may not have anticipated the challenge of the Stadium of Light.

Brian Brobbey’s brilliant late improvised finish helped Sunderland remain undefeated at their home ground heading into the November international break.

Former England striker Lineker has now revealed a theory on Shearer following Sunderland‘s late heroics against the Gunners.

Gary Lineker jokes Alan Shearer has flown away after Sunderland result vs Arsenal

Sunderland are now emerging as contenders for European football after the magnificent start to the season that Regis Le Bris has had with his squad.

The summer spending by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has paid off, as the starting lineup and bench came together to achieve a massive point against the league leaders.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast on Monday, Lineker joked to Micah Richards that Shearer’s holiday absence was linked to Sunderland’s performance against Arsenal.

Lineker said: “I don’t think anybody expected Arsenal not to win. Sunderland continue to surprise everybody – boy, they’re doing well.

“Maybe that’s another reason why Shearer has jumped on a flight!”

Shearer, like many Newcastle fans, will now be worried ahead of the upcoming Tyne-Wear derby in December.

Sunderland should be the favourites to beat Newcastle

When the Premier League fixture list was released in June earlier this year, the first thing Mackem fans would have done would be search for the fixtures against Newcastle.

A lot has changed since Newcastle beat Sunderland 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in January 2024.

Sunderland are seven points clear of the Magpies in the league, and fans are already getting ready for the derby clash right before Christmas.

The Black Cats may find themselves lucky, as the fixture comes right before AFCON, as they still have the likes of Noah Sadiki and Simon Adingra.

If Sunderland can keep their tremendous form up, there’s no doubt that they will be the favourites to win the bragging rights come December.
